Right along the commercialized main road of Sucat in Parañaque is an oasis not many know it’s there. Its facade is typical of Bio Research pet shops—you’d think the place is just one huge pet warehouse—but inside is a four-hectare garden of plants and animals.
I first heard of Lost Eden from my friend Jayvee, a fellow animal-lover. I honestly had a few reservations about going all the way to Parañaque to check out the place. Unlike him, I’m not an avid fish hobbyist (I prefer animals with fur, specifically dogs). But my husband Marc is. So together with our friend Juned (who also happens to be a huge fish fan like the two), we set forth on a day of nature tripping and pet shopping in the South’s hidden oasis.
Lost Eden is Bio Research’s latest venture. It’s a zoo, a hatchery, a plant nursery, and a store in one—you get learn about the plants and animals, as well as be able to buy them. Not everything in Lost Eden is for sale though—some animals on display are Bio Research’s prized breeders. Nonetheless, this pet shop / sanctuary is a real breather from the metro’s highly commercialized area.
Our friendly tour guide gave us snippets of information about the plants and animals on display. We saw rows of fish aquariums, a pond of turtles, birds, a huge snake, a very sociable iguana, and a plant nursery. Spanning right in the middle of the property is an interesting garden of herbs from different parts of the Philippines (and yes, some of these are for sale too).
We also visited a roomful of insects, a butterfly garden, and a mini bee farm where they actually sell pure honey—but only during harvest. You can only purchase honey and honey products during harvest, until supplies last.
Majority of the animals are for sale and came from Bio Research’s hatchery. However, some, like monkeys and the snake, were donated to Lost Eden by their owners—either they can no longer take care of them, or they simply want their pets to be part of the park.
Lost Eden is relatively new. There are still some areas that are yet to be completed, such as the part they’ve allotted for crocodiles. They are also in the process of constructing areas suitable for events and functions, although some are already being used for children’s parties and educational seminars. But what I’m really excited about is the upcoming Dog and Cat Mansion—a kennel where owners can leave their pets when they go out of town and can’t bring them along.
According to Jayvee, the park is a designated DENR Wildlife Rescue Center for endangered animals since Bio Research have the resources and facilities for the animals. I certainly hope Bio Research continues to maintain Lost Eden. We don’t have too many areas like this in our overcrowded metro.
Lost Eden is open from 9AM to 6PM, Monday to Sunday. Entrance fee is Php150 per head. As a nature enthusiast, I’d recommend checking out the place. It’s not just for kids, but also something that even adults can enjoy.
